As the final item in the sale of an extensive private collection of Nikon equipment, I am very pleased to be able to list for auction a fine example of the extraordinarily rare and beautiful Nikon Fisheye Nikkor 6mm f2.8 lens.

This exceptional and legendary lens, of which one was sold earlier this year through Grays of Westminster, enjoys mythical status, and is one of only a few hundred ever made. It was built from 1972, solely to special order, after its debut at Photokina in 1970 when it astonished and ravished the photographic world.

Weighing 5.2kg (11.5 lbs), its extreme design comprises 12 elements in 9 groups, culminating in a massive glass dome and giving a unmatched 220º field of view. This lens can, as it were, "see" behind itself.

It was originally designed for scientific, industrial and architectural purposes, and was initially to be used for taking all-sky images in Antarctica. More recently its unmatched optics have been put to artistic and creative purposes. Nil other can do what this lens can do.

The lens offered in this auction comes complete with its case and cover. It was purchased from Grays of Westminster just over a decade ago, and has been used to take fewer than a dozen photographs

It was cleaned and serviced by Nikon UK earlier this year in preparation for sale, and is in full working order.

Bidders should note the following regarding condition:

There is a tiny smudge on the coating of the rear element of no optical signification. This has been further inspected by Messrs Grays of Westminster and Mr. Philip Gilham, of Sprockets Camera Ltd, and is advised to carry no practical implications.

There are some very minor scuffs to the carrying case, acquired over time.

The massive front element of the lens is immaculate. It is pristine - as much a work of art itself as a piece of photographic equipment.

The cosmetic condition of the lens is also immaculate. It has no marks or wear of any kind.

The photographs you see are of the lens itself. I have not used professional commercial examples from the internet, as will be apparent.

This lens is offered with a reserve which although considerable, is substantially lower than the price of the example sold by Gray’s earlier this year.
